October opens with Air New Zealand launching direct into Western Sydney and Christchurch–Singapore in the same fortnight, India's Diwali booking window closing fast, and Melbourne's Spring Racing Carnival lighting up. Here is everything you need across both Australia and New Zealand.
I built this business on a simple rule: know the product better than the agents selling it, and know the market better than the competitors chasing it. October is a live test of that rule. Air New Zealand becomes the first international carrier into Western Sydney Airport on 26 October. Its new Christchurch–Singapore service goes live two days later. Two new gateways in one fortnight is not routine trade news — it's a shift in how South Island and Western Sydney itineraries should be built from today, and I expect every partner reading this to already be asking us how.
This is also the issue where Kiwi Grand Tours takes its full seat at the table, with its own dedicated New Zealand data in every edition from here. I didn't build two brands to run two separate conversations. AGT and KGT sell as one team across two countries, because that is how the strongest partners in this room are already buying.
And I will say plainly what the data confirms: Diwali falls on 8 November this year, and October is the last month to convert a family enquiry into a confirmed departure. If a client of yours has been "thinking about it" since earlier this year, that conversation ends this month — either with a deposit, or with us finding out why not.
A personal note: I will be travelling through India for the whole of October. If you are based there — or simply want a proper conversation rather than another email thread — I would genuinely love to connect, meet in person and catch up on how we can work better together. Feel free to book a slot in my calendar while I'm on the ground.
Book a Slot With ChetanA note on the numbers: ABS's monthly count is the freshest read we have, and it is now cooling for a second straight month — June was down 9.2% YoY, July down 4.3%. That is a market normalising off a record run, not a collapse: July 2026 arrivals still sat only 10.0% below pre-COVID July 2019 levels. TRA's annual IVS figures (8.5M, $57.6B spend) remain the same year-ending-March-2026 release used in the last two issues; a fresher quarterly update was not yet published at the time of writing. Stats NZ's monthly release runs on a similar lag to ABS, so June 2026 is the latest complete figure at the time of writing. Australia remains New Zealand's dominant source market at roughly 40–45% of total arrivals, over 1.5 million visitors in the trailing 12 months to February 2026. China is the standout growth story, up 214% year-on-year in February 2026 following expanded visa access — now one of NZ's fastest-growing inbound markets alongside the US, UK and Germany. (Source: Stats NZ, International Travel: June 2026.)
India delivered 27,250 arrivals to Australia in July alone (ABS) even as the broader market cooled — a clear sign of India's counter-cyclical strength. With Diwali falling on 8 November this year, October is the real deadline for multi-generational and wedding-season enquiries across both AGT and KGT itineraries. If a client has been deliberating since earlier this year, this is the month to convert "thinking about it" into a deposit.
The USA held its position as Australia's third-largest inbound market in July at 46,450 arrivals (ABS). Melbourne's Spring Racing Carnival opens this month with Caulfield Cup, building toward Melbourne Cup on 3 November — a strong hook for premium US and UK leisure clients who respond well to marquee event itineraries. Pair a Melbourne racing package with a Great Ocean Road or Yarra Valley extension.
UK arrivals came in at 34,110 in July (ABS), continuing to track below pre-pandemic benchmarks. ATEC's most recent Inbound Tourism Pulse continues to flag Middle East route disruption as the main headwind for European connecting itineraries. The advice hasn't changed: qualify European enquiries early and stay in regular contact through a longer decision phase.
Air New Zealand becomes the first international carrier into Sydney's Western Sydney (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport on 26 October, flying Auckland–WSI three times weekly. Two days later, on 28 October, Air NZ's new Christchurch–Singapore route launches, the first of three new CHC routes this quarter alongside Tokyo (28 Nov) and Perth (30 Nov).
Both routes are live this month, not "coming soon" — start quoting South Island-first New Zealand itineraries and Western Sydney-based trans-Tasman trips today, before availability tightens.
Auckland–WSI, 3x weekly. Air NZ is the first international carrier into Nancy-Bird Walton Airport, opening genuinely new routing for Western Sydney-based itineraries and reducing reliance on Kingsford Smith connections.

The NSW Government has flagged a "blockbuster" October events schedule as a deliberate tourism driver, headlined by the Deni Ute Muster on 2–3 October in Deniliquin. Regional NSW touring itineraries built around event dates are converting well this quarter.
Spring Racing Carnival opens this month and runs into Melbourne Cup on 3 November, overlapping with an active MICE calendar at MCEC. Accommodation across the CBD and Docklands is tightening fast — lock in client bookings early.
The BNZ Auckland Diwali Festival returns 31 October–1 November, the city's largest Diwali celebration outside India. South Island touring is getting an easier sell too, with new Christchurch international capacity from Air NZ's Singapore launch.
Australia continues to build its position as a leading global MICE destination, with Tourism Australia hosting a dedicated China Business Events Showcase this year to deepen incentive and conference ties with one of the region's fastest-growing outbound corporate markets. Brisbane has also picked up fresh innovation grants aimed at strengthening its role in global MICE networks across Asia, Europe and North America.
For partners: Melbourne's convention precinct is running at capacity alongside Spring Racing Carnival, and Q1 2027 is the window to lock in incentive groups before venues fill. On the New Zealand side, Kiwi Grand Tours is building combined AUS+NZ incentive itineraries — a genuine point of difference for corporate clients weighing a single-country program against a two-country one.

"We'd planned New Zealand as the add-on. By the end of the trip, it was the part we talked about most."
James and Claire from London had booked what they thought was a straightforward Australia holiday, three cities, a reef stop, done. Their AGT consultant asked one question before finalising the quote: would they consider four nights in New Zealand's South Island on the way home, now that Christchurch connects more easily than ever. They said yes almost as an afterthought.
Milford Sound in spring, a quiet Queenstown morning on the gondola, and a night at a lodge outside Te Anau changed the shape of the whole trip. "We came for the Great Barrier Reef," Claire said afterwards, "and we're already asking about going back for the South Island properly." It is exactly the kind of booking Kiwi Grand Tours was built to capture — not instead of an Australia trip, but alongside one.
