International border closures to end, full reopening by February 21

International border closures going to end and almost two years after the government closed Australia to the world, the international border is set to reopen to those who are fully vaccinated.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said after new medical advice, the new border rules would come into place on February 21.

While health officials are debating whether to change the domestic definition of fully vaccinated to include having had a booster shot, Mr Morrison said two doses would be enough for international travellers to arrive.

“The condition is you must be double vaccinated to come to Australia and That’s the rule. Everyone is expected to abide by it.” Unvaccinated travellers would still need to apply for a travel exemption to come to Australia and have to undergo hotel quarantine if they were granted permission to enter the country.

Health Minister Greg Hunt said hospitalisations from the virus were down 27 per cent since the peak of the Omicron wave.

ICU admissions were also down by 35 per cent, while the number of patients on ventilators is down by 40 per cent.

The news of International Covid-19 border going to end is welcomed by tourism bodies, which have been crying out for movement on the border closure that has hampered huge businesses.

While the international borders have been opened since late 2021, entry has only been allowed for citizens, permanent residents and their families, with it later expanded to international students, backpackers and migrant workers.

Key points:

  • People need to have had two doses of a COVID vaccine to be allowed in
  • Any un-vaccinated travellers will have to apply for an exemption before they travel to Australia
