Top Australian Winter Destination in Australia 2023. Whats your take?. Lets explore

10. Byron Bay, NSW

The popular town of Byron Bay came in at number 10 on the list of top winter spots.

The NSW haven has surged in popularity this year, the website said, rising 17 places in the rankings.

9. Hamilton Island, Queensland

The azure waters and warmer temperatures at Hamilton Island give it a lot of appeal.

That could be why the tropical location in the Whitsundays jumped into the top 10 this year, up from 11.

8. Perth, Western Australia

A new entry into the top ten this year is Perth.

The Western Australian city ranked at number 12 last year, a spot now taken by the Australian capital of Canberra.

Here is Cottesloe Beach where temperatures can still hit a high of 19C in the depths of winter.

7. Port Douglas, Queensland

Port Douglas in Far North Queensland is a popular sport for Aussies looking to warm up.

The palm tree-fringed beaches retained the number 7 spot this year.

6. Jindabyne, NSW

But not everyone is looking to escape the cold.

Snow season is almost upon us and the NSW Snowy Mountains has some great locations like Thredbo for those looking to ski or snowboard.

That could be why Jindabyne locked in as the number 6 most searched location.

5. Cairns, Queensland

Cairns, with its esplanade pool, attracts plenty of Aussies in winter.

Its own tourism appeal boasts “daily temperatures in the mid-20s, next to no rain, low humidity and nights that are warm enough to keep the windows wide open”.

It came in as the fifth most popular destination, with two other Queensland locations rounding out the top five.

4. Brisbane, Queensland

Nestled on the banks of the longest river in South East Queensland, Brisbane is the fourth most popular winter travel search.

The Queensland capital held on to the position from last year, topped again by it’s popular neighbour.

3. Gold Coast, Queensland

The Gold Coast, with its relaxed beaches and bars and restaurants, took out the number three spot.

You can also whale watch and head over to the popular theme parks.

2. Melbourne

Melbourne has long rated itself as the food capital of Australia and if you’re willing to brave the cold temperatures, there’s plenty to do in the Victorian capital.

There are festivals, gigs and exhibitions leaning into the colder climate.

But this year, another capital took the coveted top spot.

1. Sydney

Sydney has been crowned as the most popular travel destination for this winter, according to how people are searching.

This year you can check out the Vivid light festival, which stretches into the month of June, do some whale watching as they migrate up the east coast or if you’re brave head to Icebergs and join those who swim in the winter months.

Sydney has jumped up two spots this year, ranking third in 2022.
