High Season (Dec−Feb)

  • Summertime: wet season up north, bush fires in the south.
  • Accommodation price rises, busy beaches.
  • Festivals season: arts, food, film, music.

Shoulder (Mar−May & Sep−Nov)

  • Warm sun, clear skies, cool nights.
  • Coastal areas busy at Easter with families.
  • Autumn colours are atmospheric in Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia.

Low Season (Jun−Aug)

  • Cool wintery days down south; mild with sunny skies up north.
  • Lower tourist numbers; some attractions keep slightly shorter hours.
  • Head for the desert, the tropical north, or whale-watching spots.

Top Tips

  • Road trips can be epic here, stop regularly to rest and refresh. If time is tight, consider taking internal flights rather than spending too much time on the highways at the expense of wilderness.
  • Don’t drive far at night. Between the car-wrecking kangaroos and other nocturnal creatures, you also have large trucks and road trains to consider.
  • Don’t be too ambitious – Australia is a big place. Plan to see a few regions well, and hope to return one day to join the grey nomads doing a year-long lap of the map.

What to Wear

It will be of no surprise to learn that the theme is casual in Australia; but it’s not a free-for-all. More upmarket venues will require proper shoes and presentable attire (no trainers). It’s very hot in the desert and much of inland Australia; wet and humid in the tropical north; and sometimes sub-zero in winter in Tasmania. Broad-brimmed hats, light airy clothing and a swimsuit are essential, but an umbrella, warm clothes and a scarf may be needed in winter even in the outback.

Pre-Departure Checklist

  • Make sure your passport is arranged well in advance of your departure date, valid for at least 6 months from departure and valid for the duration of your trip.It’s also a good idea to leave a copy of your passport and travel documents with someone at home. The Australian Government encourages all Australians travelling overseas to register with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade before travel, so you can be contacted in an emergency.
  • Visa : Check whether you need a visa for each of the countries you’ll travel in. Power Plug

For Australia the associated plug type is I, which is the plug that has three flat pins in a triangular pattern. Australia operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz. The 3-flat-pin plug is used in all States of Australia (including its external territories), New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands.

Visa

Unless you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, you will need a valid Australian visa to enter the country. New Zealand passport holders can apply for a visa upon arrival in the country. Language

Australia has no official language. English is considered the de facto national language, however. The primary dialect in Australia is General Australian or Australian English which differs in some ways from American and U.K. English in terms of spelling and grammar. Overall about 76.8% of the people speak English-only, 18.2% are non-English speakers.
